Documentary Family Photography

Photographing families in their everyday life is an art. While documentary family photography can include candid shots, it’s so much more than snapping photos while the subject isn’t looking. Relying on a photojournalistic style, documentary photography for families tells a story from a series of unposed, natural images. Each photo is deliberate and chosen to build emotion for the viewer and especially the family when they look back and remember those feelings they had in the ordinary moments with their loved ones.

Why You’ll Love Your Family Documentary Photos

When you want photos of your family just as they are, completely natural with real interactions, you’ll want a photographer that documents your life as it happens. I photograph the beauty among the chaos of everyday life. We won’t take time to stage the perfect moment. Instead, we’ll allow the perfect moment to happen.

  • Genuine emotions & candid moments
  • Live your life while I photograph your day
  • Remember the small moments as they are
  • No need for coordinating outfits or forced smiles
  • Messy rooms make for great pictures, too!

Documentary family photos are perfect for printing and framing on your wall. You’ll have real art made from the love and life of your family to display throughout your home.

What to Expect During Your Session

When it comes to documentary photography, there is no posing or creating moments. I observe the family’s interactions and capture the energy of the room. I’ll blend into the environment until the family feels comfortable or forgets I’m documenting their everyday life. There are no additional lights, backgrounds, or props. Rather than adjusting lighting or moving objects, I’ll change position to get a shot. Editing is minimal and usually just involves adjusting lights and shadows.
